The Vampire Lestat (1985) is a vampire novel by American writer Anne Rice, the second in her Vampire Chronicles, following Interview with the Vampire (1976). The story is told from the point of view of the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, while Interview is narrated by Louis de Pointe du Lac.

The novel follows Lestat's rise to fame as a 1980s rockstar, his early experiences as a vampire, and his search for meaning and connection in his vampiric existence. It also offers some of Lestat's perspective on the events of Interview with the Vampire, which has been published as an in-universe novel by the journalist, Daniel Molloy.

Plot summary
Following the events of the first book, in the 1980s, the vampire Lestat is awakened. As a response to Louis's recollections, Lestat decides to publish his own autobiography and join a band, "The Vampire Lestat". He hopes the notoriety will reunite him with those from his past, as well as expose vampires to the world.

Lestat's autobiography opens in the 18th century with his life in an impoverished family, where Lestat has few prospects except the arts. By age 20, Lestat is sent to kill invasive wolves and barely survives, becoming depressed. His mother, Gabrielle, encourages him to meet Nicolas de Lenfent, who has recently returned from Paris. After connecting, the pair run away to Paris, gaining jobs at a theater.

One of Lestat's admirers is a centuries-old vampire, Magnus, seeing Lestat as a potential heir to his power. He kidnaps, imprisons, and later forces Lestat to become a vampire, before killing himself. Horrified and exhilarated, Lestat stays away from his family while taking victims he deems malicious. He watches Nicolas and his theatre troupe from afar but later seeks them and becomes overwhelmed by their scents. Delirious, Lestat chaotically reveals his powers onstage. After this, he feels irreconcilably inhuman and begins taking innocent victims. Gabrielle, dying of tuberculosis, finds Lestat. To save her, Lestat transforms her into a vampire. The pair runs afoul of the Children of Darkness, a coven of devil-worshipping vampires led by Armand, who disapprove of them mingling with humanity; Armand kidnaps Nicolas to lure Lestat. Gabrielle and Lestat later escape with Nicolas, who begs to become a vampire; Lestat reluctantly transforms him.

At a ball, Armand attempts to seduce and drain Lestat - but Lestat is resilient. Armand asks for companionship - and reveals he was made by a Roman vampire, Marius de Romanus. Lestat refuses but offers Armand the theater, as the coven's cemetery is set to be demolished. Armand and Nicolas, alongside some of the coven vampires, found the Theatre des Vampires to perform disturbing plays. Lestat despises the corruption of the theatre, and Nicolas scorns Lestat's attempts at humanity, joining Armand while Lestat travels with Gabrielle.

Lestat leaves messages for Marius in numerous places and leaves France with Gabrielle. He learns that Nicolas became mad and committed suicide, while Lestat's brothers later died in the French Revolution. Gabrielle tells Lestat she intends to go away from humanity, and they part. Overwhelmed, Lestat descends into the earth to sleep.

Lestat is awoken by Marius, who takes him to his home. He shows Lestat the progenitors of all vampires, Akasha and Enkil. He tells of when they were exposed to sunlight, killing all but the oldest vampires. Marius was transformed to discover what caused the calamity and now safeguards the pair. Marius warns Lestat not to disturb Akasha and Enkil, but Lestat feels compelled to see them. After awakening the pair, Lestat is attacked by Enkil. He is saved by Marius, who says Lestat cannot stay. Marius advises him to live one "human" lifetime; without one, he will not have the strength to endure immortality.

Lestat recalls Interview with the Vampire, including his arrival in New Orleans, his love for Louis, and remorse for turning Claudia into a child vampire, feeling she was justified in her attempt to kill him. Lestat reveals that after Claudia's attempt, he went to Armand to beg for blood to heal. Armand refused and manipulated Lestat to testify against Claudia, who Armand believed should not exist. After the trial in which Claudia is destroyed, Armand claims he also destroyed Louis. Armand tells Lestat he has not forgiven his prior rejection and destruction of his coven before pushing him off a tower. After recovering, Lestat returns to New Orleans. He wastes away for several years before going to sleep in the earth.

In the present, before Lestat's concert, Louis tracks him down. Louis has read Lestat's autobiography, just as Lestat read Louis's Interview with the Vampire, and they reconcile. Lestat proceeds with the concert and they kiss. The concert is later attacked by vampires who oppose Lestat's revelations, until they burst into flames. Gabrielle arrives after tracking Lestat's recent stardom and they escape with Louis. It is revealed that Lestat's concert has awakened Akasha, who burned the attacking vampires. Lestat feels Akasha arrive to kidnap him for some unknown purpose.

Background
Anne Rice's inspiration for Lestat's rock star persona was the Doors' lead vocalist Jim Morrison.[1][2] whose music she discovered when she was writing The Vampire Lestat.[3] Rice related in a May 2010 Facebook post, "It was Morrison's voice I heard when I wrote the songs for Lestat. Here's the closest thing in the wide world to my hero."[1]

Publication
The Vampire Lestat was released on October 31, 1985.[4] Told from the point of view of Lestat, who was previously introduced in Interview with the Vampire, the novel explores the titular vampire's backstory.[5][6] The Vampire Lestat also reinforces and expands upon Rice's vampire mythology, and The New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani noted, "We learn lots of 'facts' about vampires and vampire culture. We learn that they cry tears of blood, that they're capable of reading other people's minds, that they can be destroyed by fire and sunlight. We learn that 'no vampire may ever destroy another vampire, except that the coven master has the power of life and death over all of his flock'; and we learn that 'no vampire shall ever reveal his true nature to a mortal and allow that mortal to live'."[7]

In December 1985, it was reported that the novel would soon be adapted into a film.[8]

Adaptations
Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat
The Vampire Lestat was adapted into a comic and released as a 12-part miniseries by Innovation Comics in 1990 and 1991. The comic, which was formally titled Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat and featured Daerick Gross and Mike Okamoto as lead artists, had a script adapted from the novel by Rice and Faye Perozich. In 1991 the entire series was published as a graphic novel by Ballantine.[9]

Queen of the Damned
Parts of The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned were loosely adapted into the 2002 film Queen of the Damned. The film was a critical failure, and disappointed some viewers. Rice herself dismissed the film. On her Facebook page, any time the subject was brought up, she repeatedly commented that The Queen of the Damned film is not something she could understand or embrace, that she encouraged them not to do the film and that it hurt her to see her work "mutilated" the way it was.[10]

Lestat: The Musical
The novel formed the basis for the short-lived 2006 Broadway show Lestat. The musical, which was composed by Elton John and Bernie Taupin and written by Linda Woolverton, had a pre-Broadway tryout in California in late 2005 and ran for a total of 33 previews and 39 official performances at the Palace Theater in New York.[11]

Television
Main article: The Vampire Lestat (TV series)
In November 2016, Rice announced on Facebook that the rights to her novels were reverted to her despite earlier plans for other adaptations. Rice said that she and her son Christopher would be developing and executive producing a potential television series based on the novels.[12] In April 2017, they teamed up with Paramount Television and Anonymous Content to develop a series.[13] As of early 2018, Bryan Fuller was involved with the creation of a potential TV series based on the novels.[14] On July 17, 2018, it was announced that the series was in development at streaming service Hulu and that Fuller had departed the production.[15] As of December 2019, Hulu's rights had expired and Rice was shopping a package including all film and TV rights to the series.[16] In May 2020, it was announced that AMC had acquired the rights to The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches for developing film and television projects[17] with Anne and Christopher Rice serving as executive producers on any projects developed.[17]

Interview with the Vampire premiered on October 2, 2022, and Mayfair Witches on January 8, 2023. The second season of Interview with the Vampire features flashbacks to some of the events of The Vampire Lestat, including Lestat's life as an actor in the 18th century, his relationship with Nicolas, and his meeting and conflict with Armand. The show was renewed in June 2024 with the third season slated to adapt The Vampire Lestat. A teaser for the upcoming season was released in July 2024 following Comic Con, which showed Sam Reid as Lestat in his rockstar persona reciting the first few lines of the novel.[18]

Audiobooks
There have been three audiobook adaptations of The Vampire Lestat: a 1989 abridged version narrated by Michael York;[19] a 1994 unabridged version narrated by Frank Muller;[20][21] and a 2011 unabridged version narrated by Simon Vance.[22][23]

Critical reception
The Vampire Lestat debuted at No. 9 on The New York Times Best Seller list,[24] spending a total of six weeks on the list.[25] The New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani found Rice's vampire mythology "more compelling than the rest of the novel", and wrote, "While Lestat's not an unlikable vampire ... it's hard to take his dilemmas all that seriously."[7] Kirkus Reviews wrote that "Rice dots Lestat's tale with some marvelous chillers ... vampire bonanza in appropriate dark, humid, spider-web narrative—Rice's specialty"[4] The Free Lance–Star wrote: "“The Vampire Lestat” is tedious at times, especially when the vampires are arguing among themselves over their fundamental philosophy."[26] Ottawa Citizen called the novel "a masterpiece of the genre".[27] Reviewing the audiobook adaptation, AudioFile wrote that "the plot twists are difficult to follow at times".[20]

Dave Langford reviewed The Vampire Lestat for White Dwarf #86, and stated that "[Rice is] audacious enough to propound an acceptable 'origin story' for vampirism, and to move from dark old Egyptian mysteries to the extremes of twentieth-century Dionysian ecstasy as Lestat gives his first live rock performance. Nice one."[28]

The Tale of the Body Thief is a vampire novel by American writer Anne Rice, the fourth in her The Vampire Chronicles series, following The Queen of the Damned (1988). Published in 1992, it continues the adventures of Lestat, specifically his efforts to regain his lost humanity during the late 20th century. Chapters from the book appeared in the October 1992 issue of Playboy.

Plot summary
At the beginning of the story, Lestat grows depressed and becomes remorseful because of his vampiric nature. Although he tries to limit his victims to murderers, serial killers and other criminals, he nonetheless caves into temptation once in a while and kills an "innocent", or someone who he feels does not necessarily deserve to die. Lestat also suffers from constant nightmares concerning his late "daughter", Claudia, for whose death he blames himself.

Since Akasha's defeat, Lestat has become extremely lonely. Among his only remaining friends is David Talbot, the elderly mortal head of the Talamasca. Although Lestat has repeatedly offered to turn David, he has always refused to become a vampire and keep Lestat company through eternity. Lestat goes to the Gobi Desert at dawn in a half-hearted suicide attempt. When he does not die, he goes to David's home in England to heal.

A mysterious figure, Raglan James, approaches Lestat with what seems to be a cure for his ennui and depression. James sends Lestat several messages hinting that he has the ability to switch bodies. Eventually, he proposes to Lestat that the two of them trade bodies for a day. David reveals that James was a gifted psychic who once joined the Talamasca, but was kicked out of the order for constant theft.

James is a kleptomaniac who has stolen or schemed for literally everything he owns, from his house to his body. However, he also has major psychic problems, and his life is a series of cycles—he gets rich by theft, then often ends up in prison. Dying of cancer several years before, James tricked an inmate of a mental institution into switching bodies with him, allowing him a type of immortality. Against the advice of David and other vampires, Lestat jumps at the opportunity. Unfortunately, James has no intention of ever switching back, and Lestat is forced to scheme to regain his body.

Lestat nearly dies after becoming human again—his new body is wracked by pneumonia, which he ignores during a tour of Washington D.C. in the middle of winter. He is saved by the care of a nun named Gretchen. He enjoys a short love affair with Gretchen before she returns to South America, where she works in a convent, and Lestat sets out in search of his body.

Lestat seeks help from other vampires but is completely ostracized. Louis turns Lestat away when he asks to turn his new body, arguing that Lestat ought to be happy to be human again and also calling him out for slandering him in previous writings. Marius is extremely angry at him for leaving such a powerful body to a thief. Lestat's only ally is David.

It is James's lack of imagination and petty thievery that allow Lestat and David to track him down. Despite his newfound wealth and powerful new body, James continues to steal jewelry from people. He also makes a conspicuous show of his wealth, boarding the Queen Elizabeth 2 and draining victims of their blood along the ship's path. The pattern allows his pursuers to easily find him aboard the ship. While Lestat manages to regain his body with David's help, he performs the switch during a sunrise and must immediately flee to a safe place during the day. When he awakes in the evening, he finds that both David and James have disappeared.

Lestat finds David in Florida and is surprised to find that his friend, despite his earlier protestations, now wants to become a vampire. However, while taking his blood, Lestat discovers a final trick—when forced out of Lestat's body, James took over David's body instead of returning to his own. Lestat angrily attacks James, crushing his skull. The blow proves fatal—the injury damages James's brain and prevents him from either leaving the dying body or attempting another switch.

David begins to enjoy life in the young body previously occupied by James. Lestat returns to New Orleans, reunites with Louis, and begins to renovate his old house in the French Quarter. However, Lestat regains his "evil" nature upon finally accepting his vampirism and decides to turn David against his wishes. David initially resists Lestat's aggressive advances, but eventually succumbs. Soon after David and Lestat admit their love for each other. David disappears again, prompting Lestat to fruitlessly search for him. Lestat returns to New Orleans and is surprised to find that David has already contacted Louis.

David explains to Lestat that, in secret, this is what he always truly wanted. He tells Lestat that he is no longer angry with him, although he does usurp Lestat's position of leadership, despite the latter's protests. Having gotten rid of his old age and mortality, David plans to visit Rio de Janeiro with Louis, and asks Lestat to join him. At the end, Lestat realizes that, despite all that happened, he is still alone, has failed to regain his "humanity", and has thrown away his only chance to make amends for his past misdeeds.

Film adaptation
In 2007, The Tale of the Body Thief was rumored to be adapted into film as United Artists was interested in purchasing the film rights to the novel.[1] Rice announced via her Facebook profile on February 7, 2012, that Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's film production company, Imagine Entertainment, had optioned the motion picture rights to the novel. Lee Patterson was to have written the screenplay. Transformer's Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were also said to be on board as producers during the time of development.[2]

"The plan is to treat the character (Lestat) as if audiences have not met him before," said Entertainment Weekly with word from Imagine.[3]

On April 7, 2013, during a live-internet radio chat with her son Christopher and co-host Eric Shaw Quinn, Anne explained that a film adaptation is no longer in development and stated on her Facebook profile: "No Lestat movie in the works—after all these years, and the best efforts of all involved... We've encountered difficulties we cannot at this time overcome." Rice's son Christopher apparently drafted and adapted a screenplay from the novel that was met with praise from those involved; however, the project has been dismissed as the studio isn't "willing to move forward with it" due to differences that were beyond them.[4]

As of August 2014, an entire reboot of The Vampire Chronicles was planned by producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci after the motion picture rights were optioned by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. Christopher Rice's screenplay for The Tale of the Body Thief was reportedly worked into the recent deal for a proposed film franchise and a reinterpretation of Interview with the Vampire was also hinted by Rice herself via Facebook.[5] However, in November 2016 Universal did not renew the contract, and the film and television rights reverted to Rice, who began developing The Vampire Chronicles into a television series with Christopher.[6][7]

Reception
The New York Times remarked that the "gorgeousness" found in the prose of earlier novels is "practically absent from "Body Thief" and noted that "The "Vampire Chronicles" seem to be careening down a steep, sad slope".[8] Kirkus Reviews said the novel starts slow, but once it gets going, Rice "provides her most inspired pages ever".[9] Publishers Weekly called the prose "sensuous" and "fluid".[10]

SWAMIJI:  Yes, residing in your own body, in your own nature. Sometime you are happy, sometime you are sad, sometime you think that you are God yourself, and sometime you think you are nothing, you have gone, you are mixed in dust, all these things, it is ādhyātmika. Ādhidaivika is that which comes from . . . JOACHIM:  Sensual organs? SWAMIJI:  No. . . . which comes from gods. That is thunders, clouds, rains, earthquakes, fire. ERNIE:  Trees growing, plants? Ādhiyajña is that which rises from yajñas, from sacrificial fires, that fruit which comes out from that. Ādhibhūta is that which comes from bhūtas, five elements, five great elements: earth, water, etc. JOACHIM:  Earth, water, fire, air, and ākāśa. SWAMIJI:  Floods, wind, storms, all these things, these actions are called adhibhūta. All these are my expansion; this is my expanded nature everywhere.   Prayāṇa . . . (verse 30), the person, that person, those persons who understand me like that i.e. that, “this is the nature of God consciousness everywhere residing,” prayāṇakāle, in the end when they leave their bodies, māṁ te viduryuktacetasaḥ, they understand me. pralayāṇakāle ca . . . (comm. verse 30) At the time of death . . . nityaṁ bhagavadbhāvitāntaḥkaraṇatvāt . . . (because he has been adopting one-pointedness of God in his lifetime, if he is meditating, if he has been meditating during his lifetime continuously–that is what he says), then, in the end, when he leaves the body, when his consciousness has gone beyond control, beyond his control, at the time when he is in a coma state, he’ll be meditating inside; internally he’ll be meditating. If he meditates during his life period, he will be meditating in that coma state also, at the time when he is going to leave this body, at that time also he will be thinking of God, internally. This is very fine. Prayāṇakāle, at the time of death, nityaṁ bhagavad bhāvita antaḥ karaṇatvāt, because he has bhāvita antaḥ karaṇa, antaḥ karaṇa, his mind is focused in his lifetime towards God only, so, at the time of death also his mind will be focused to him. DENISE:  So the strongest impression in his mind. SWAMIJI:  Yes. māṁjānanti, So they understand me in the end. yato yeṣaṁ janmapūrvameva bhagavattattvaṁ; Because, janma pūrvameva bhagavat tattvaṁ, in the period of their lives, livelihood (livelihood–not), at the time of their living period, when they have adopted the nature of God, when they have meditated upon the nature of God in their living period . . . te ‘ntakāle parameśvaraṁ saṁsmareyuḥ  / . . . those persons will necessarily remember God at the time of death also. But on the contrary . . . ‘kiṁ janmāsevanayā’–iti ye manyante; teṣāṁ tūṣṇīṁbhāva eva śobhana iti śivam  //  (comm. not recited fully) . . . iti ye manyante, those who understand that, “kiṁ janmāsevanayā, why to worry to meditate in [your] lifetime, try to meditate at that very period, at the time of death . . . DENISE:  How can you? SWAMIJI:  . . . be, enjoying in this world for the time being, [and] at the time of death think of Lord!”–those persons who say like this, (this is what he, [Abhinavagupta] says), “kiṁ janmāsevanayā, you should not worry to meditate till the end,”–iti ye manyante; teṣāṁ tūṣṇīṁbhāva eva śobhana, for them I have nothing to say, I have nothing whatsoever to tell them. atra saṁgrahaślokaḥ The conclusion of this. sphuṭaṁ bhagavato bhaktirāhitā kalpamañjarī  /   (concl. Ch 7) The attachment of Lord Śiva, if it is developed day by day in your lifetime, āhitā kalpamañjarī, it becomes kalpamañjarī, it becomes that tree, bestower of all boons, that tree which is existing in heaven. DENISE:  Wish-fulfilling tree. SWAMIJI:  All your desires are fulfilled. sādhakecchāsamucitāṁ yenāśāṁ paripūrayet //  (concl. Ch 7) And samucitāṁ sādhaka icchāṁ, the icchā, the desire of sādhaka, desire of devotee’s of Lord Śiva is fulfilled by that bhakti, by that attachment of Lord. Bas! Wednesday 16th. We set out early & finish’d about one oClock & then Travell’d up to Frederick Town where our Baggage came to us. We cleaned ourselves (to get Rid of the Game we had catched the Night before) & took a Review of the Town & then return’d to our Lodgings where we had a good Dinner prepar’d for us Wine & Rum Punch in Plenty & a good Feather Bed with clean Sheets which was a very agreeable regale.

BIG WIN just moments ago at the Supreme Court, in the Slaughter Case, confirming Presidential Power in our Country to remove Executive Branch Officers and Agency Appointees, or Representatives, under Article II. This Decision was long sought by United States Presidents, dating all the way back to the 1930s. It is such an Honor to be the sitting President who won this Historic and Unprecedented Ruling, one of the most important ever given with respect to Presidential Powers.
